Individualized Programs

California Learning Center has developed a unique learning system. Students begin by taking a thorough diagnostic evaluation in reading, writing, math, algebra, or study skills. The results are correlated with materials in the center. We use the results of the evaluation to set goals and prescribe the appropriate materials for each student. We anticipate the completion of the prescribed goals within 48 sessions. We retest students after 48 sessions, using the alternate form of the initial diagnostic evaluation. We utilize positive reinforcement and deliberate growth strategies to enable students to meet their goals. The teachers at CLC undergo additional training to learn how to apply the strategies and materials for students' varied needs and learning styles. The Director or Associate Director also meets with the students' classroom teachers and other key individuals (per request) to ensure that skills are being transferred to the school setting.

Reading

The individualized reading program includes word attack skills, vocabulary development, and comprehension (general and specific comprehension subskills). We use a multi-sensory approach in our language-based programs. Students read stories and answer questions, work on the computer, and use hands-on materials to learn phonics and structural analysis skills. Activities vary within the hourly sessions to maintain students' interests. Students are often so involved in learning that they are surprised when the hour is over!

Writing

The individualized writing program is designed to teach prewriting skills, organization, writing strategies, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Math

The individualized math program includes basic and pre-algebra skills. We use traditional paper and pencil tasks, manipulatives, computer programs, and math games to develop clear understandings of mathematical concepts.

Algebra

The individualized algebra program focuses on the following skills: introduction to algebra, working with real numbers, solving equations and problems, polynomials, fractions, introduction to functions, systems of linear equations, inequalities, rational and irrational numbers, and quadratic functions.

Study Skills

The study skills program is designed to teach organization, note taking, reading comprehension, memorization, test preparation, speed-reading, and test taking strategies.

In addition to the subjects listed above, we provide individualized tutoring in many academic areas. Please do not hesitate to ask about specific subjects, we have a great network of teachers and can accommodate specific needs.
