About Our Enrichment Program

Our enrichment courses are designed to extend learning beyond your child's standard classroom curriculum. We have a variety of workshops available for learners of all ages. New courses begin regularly and are designed as one-hour sessions lasting for eight weeks. We can accomodate requests for customized small group instruction.

Fun with Phonics Workshop

Improve your child’s reading, writing, spelling, speaking/listening, and penmanship skills! Our workshop is designed for emerging readers entering grades Pre-K through 2 and includes:

  • Balanced, integrated, individualized instruction featuring music and technology components
  • Age-appropriate and standards-aligned instruction delivered by credentialed teachers
  • Active engagement in reading and understanding a wide variety of literature
  • Writing practice to improve penmanship, spelling, and comfort in written tasks
  • Speaking and listening activities to improve command of standard English spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and usage

NEW: Myth Busting Santa Barbara - SCARY Nature Revealed

Learn about the roles of "scary stuff" we find in nature with a hands-on, fun, enrichment course! Topics of this eight-week course include:

  • Dirty Stuff: Dirt and soil - why is it important?
  • Slimy Stuff: Fungus, invertebrates, and bacteria - Nature's FBI!
  • Powerful Plants: The poisonous plants of Santa Barbara, how they defend themselves, and the "powers" they have.
  • Creepy Crawlies: Insects and Arachnids
  • PREDATORS in the ocean: Sharks, stingrays, jellyfish, tsunamis and more.
  • Nocturnal Santa Barbara - What comes out at night?

College Application Essay Writing Workshop

Create a top-notch college application essay with one-on-one instruction from Melissa Marsted!

Melissa Marsted earned a BA from Harvard University and an MA in Organizational Management from Antioch University. She was a college advisor at Laguna Blanca School as well as a chair of the Santa Barbara Schools and Scholarship Committee for Harvard University Admissions. She is a volunteer alumna admissions interviewer for Harvard University and a writing tutor at the Writing Center at SBCC. She is a freelance writer, grant writer, and children's book author. Melissa recently founded Lucky Penny Press, an on-line children's book publishing company.

  • Option A: Three one-hour sessions
    1. Brainstorm topics and outline essays
    2. Review drafts, thesis statement, topic sentences, paragraph structure
    3. Final draft, review flow, sentence structure, grammatical help.
  • Option B: One 90-minute session to review and work on final draft.

Homeschool Support

Morning hours are available for homeschooled students. We can provide private tutoring or group sessions. We also have morning hours for most of our enrichment courses.
